West End - 2010
We visited West End twice, both times getting on a mooring as the bay is very exposed to wind and weather from the north and west. Fortunately, the weather treated us well, and we had a good time. We went into town for groceries, laundry, and a couple of meals. West End is best known for its good diving, and dive operations (with attending tourists) abound. We didn’t do any diving on either visit, due to Jim’s ear drum not yet being healed, but we hope to do so next time around.
The most delightful discovery in the West End area was the beachfront bar and restaurant called Aventura Beach Club. We were delighted with the kids who were running it, Emil and Mariela, and tried to help them with some marketing tips as they were struggling to keep things going. We gave them a hand-held VHF radio, so they could announce happy hours to cruisers, and hoped that might bring in some business. However, we have been advised that they didn’t make a go of it, and that now the place is not only closed, but torn down. It’s such a shame. A small amount of investment capital would have helped them succeed as they had a great idea, terrific food, and worked really hard. Wish we could have helped more.
